The Honorable Pier Forlano
Consul General of Italy in Philadelphia

Consul General Pier Forlano was born in Ferrara. In 1985 he graduated from the Facoltà Cesare Alfieri in Florence with a degree in Political Science.

He is a highly motivated and dedicated diplomat, with 30 years of professional experience, including appointments in four Embassies (Bulgaria, Malta, South Africa and Australia). He has attended several highly specialized professional training courses at the Scuola per Alta Amministrazione, at the International University College in Turin and at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Rome. He has been responsible for the administration of human resources, structural management organization, coordination of various events and diplomatic representations - all requiring strong networking and advocacy skills.

In 1987 he was appointed Deputy Chief of the Asia and Africa Office of the General Administration for Emigration and Social Affairs. From 1990 to 1994 he was assigned to the Italian Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria, as Chief Officer of the Consular and Commercial sector.

Between 1994 and 1999 he was appointed Deputy Director to the General Director at the Embassy of Italy in La Valletta.

In 1999 he returned to Rome and was assigned as Chief Officer of Cultural Agreements and Protocols and Scientific Promotion, followed by a position as Deputy Officer for the Italian Schools overseas, and Chief of Staff of the General Directorate for Cultural Relations from 1999 until 2004.

Between 2004 and 2008 he was assigned as Deputy Head of Mission at the Italian Embassy in Pretoria, where, for a long time he was Chargé d’Affaires.

From 2008 to 2012 he served at the Embassy of Italy in Canberra as Deputy
Counselor, in charge of consular affairs: in 2009 he organized a seminar entitled “Italians Down Under” covering a wide variety of topics including language, Italian-Australian identity, the image of Italy in Australia and elder citizens to name just a few.

He contributed to the drafting of an Australian law designed to promote a new national curriculum for the study of foreign languages and successfully obtained funding for the Yarralumla bilingual school. He also organized a seminar for Italian companies in the aero-space industry, and was able to obtain sponsorships from major Italian operators in Australia. He revitalized the cultural local life with concerts of Italian arias, art and sculpture exhibits, conferences, ballets and Italian Cinema festivals, bringing the community together with the publication of an Embassy Newsletter.

He created and launched a website with the objective of promoting the Italian language and published two DVD sets for use in schools and universities where Italian classes on the Risorgimento are taught.

From 2012 to 2017 he was appointed Chief Officer for 27 Sahel countries, the region of the Great Lakes and Central Africa and subsequently appointed as the Official responsible for issues related to the entire Sub-Saharian Africa and regional organizations.

He has been decorated with the recognition of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and Knight of the Order of Merit of Malta.

Pier Forlano was appointed Consul General of Italy in Philadelphia on August 14, 2017.
He is married and has two children.
