The Consul General

Cristiana Mele, Consul General of Italy in Philadelphia since September 20, 2021, began her diplomatic career in 1998 at the Directorate for Economic Affairs, Office for Central and Eastern Europe.

Assigned on her first foreign mission at the Consulate General in Zurich as Vice Consul and later as Deputy Consul, she continued her career as Consul in Perth (Western Australia) from 2003 to 2007.

Upon returning to Italy, she served as Deputy Head of the Office for the Great Lakes Region at the Directorate for Sub-Saharan Africa, and after a period of study abroad, she became the Head of the Office for Defense at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Civil and Arbitration Procedures at the Legal Service of the Ministry in Rome (SGCT).

From 2014 to 2018, she served as Counselor at the Permanent Representation of Italy to the United Nations in New York, with the functions of Chief of Staff of the Italian Permanent Representative, and later as Head of Sustainable Development and Environment for the Italian Representation, delegated to the Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

She was appointed Vice-President of the Second Committee for the 72nd United Nations General Assembly representing the WEOG Group.

In Rome, from 2018 to 2020, she worked at the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation as Deputy Head of the Unit for Multilateral Affairs and Global Strategies, focal point for Food Security, Agriculture, and Nutrition in Development Cooperation, and responsible for gender equality policies in cooperation.

In 2021, during Italy’s presidency of the G20, she was the Chair of the G20 thematic group on food security, negotiating the Matera Declaration.

She holds a degree in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Florence and has obtained a Master’s degree in International Affairs with a specialization in Environmental Policies from Columbia University in New York.

She is a staunch advocate for gender equality and is passionate about almost every sport and outdoor activity. During her years in New York, she led the running group of the Italian Representation, which won second place in its category in the indoor marathon relay in 2017
