Electronic identity card (EIC)
The Consulate General of Italy in Philadelphia has started the issuance of the electronic identity card (CIE) on a trial basis.
It is now possible to apply for the new electronic ID card, by appointment, through the PRENOT@MI platform.
The EIC may only be issued to Italian citizens regularly residing in their consular district, who are already entered into the consular register and whose personal data are already present in the Interior Ministry’s database of the Register of Italians living abroad (A.I.R.E.) (and, in the future, in the National Register of the Resident Population – ANPR).
For the EIC to be issued, a validated tax code is also required.
1.Validity
The validity of the identity card varies depending on the holder’s age:
– 3 years for minors under 3 years of age;
– 5 years for minors between 3 and 18 years of age;
– 10 years for adults.
2. Application procedure
The electronic ID card application must be submitted using the Prenot@MI platform only.
PLEASE NOTE: In the event that, as a result of the verifications, any elements hindering the issuance of the CIE emerge, it will be the responsibility of this Consulate to inform the person concerned also for the purpose of cancelling the appointment.
Please note that registration in A.I.R.E. is indispensable for the purpose of submitting the application for the issuance of the CIE. It is also indispensable, for Italian citizens born abroad, that the relevant birth certificate is already transcribed in the Civil Status Registers of the municipality of reference, as the details of the transcription must be reported on the CIE.
The presence of the applicant and/or the holder of the requested card is mandatory.
On the day of the Consulate appointment, biometric data will be acquired and the dossier will be validated.
In the case of a change of residence address (from the one previously communicated to the Consular Office), it is necessary to request the change of address through the FAST IT portal before making the reservation.
3. Appointment and documents to be submitted
When showing up at the appointment, the citizen shall provide the following documents:
- 1 passport photo, in paper format, of the same type as those used for the passport;
- identity document in accordance with Presidential Decree 445/2000. If the applicant has no identity document, he / she shall be accompanied by two witnesses;
- an affidavit from the other parent if the applicant has children under the age of 18 (regardless of the applicant’s marital status: single, married, separated or divorced)
atto di assenso al rilascio da parte dell’altro genitore (affidavit of consent to the issuance of the document by the other parent)
- an affidavit from both parents if the applicant is under the age of 18
atto di assenso di entrambi genitori (affidavit of consent to the issuance of the document by both parents)
At the time of the appointment, the consular officer shall take the applicant’s photo and, except for minors under 12 years of age, the fingerprints, and the signature, which shall be securely recorded inside his / her EIC microchip and not stored in any other place.
4. Cost
Payment must be made on the day of the appointment by Money Order (only USPS accepted) or cash. Verify that the amount is as indicated in the updated consular table.
5. Delivery of the identity card
The CIE is printed and then delivered by mail to the residence address (or address) declared by the applicant, by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, within 15 days from the date of the request in the Consulate.
In the event of non-delivery due to an incorrect address, there is provision for storage at the local post office, after which the envelope is returned to the relevant Consular Office for a further delivery attempt.
