How to apply for AIRE

Citizens can submit their AIRE application online using the Fast-It portal.

Instructions on how to apply can be found on the website.

Documents to be uploaded are:

  • Application form
  • Proof of Italian citizenship (Italian passport, transcription of birth certificate, Carta d’Identità – for those born in Italy)
  • American passport (for those who were born abroad and do not hold an Italian passport)
  • Proof of residence in the US (driving license, housing contract, recent utilities bill)
  • Permit of residence (for those born before 30.07.1992)
  • US Naturalization certificate (for those born before 30.07.1992 who do not hold a permit of residence)

Please note that Italian Townships can autonomously proceed with AIRE registration if an Italian citizen residing abroad has not applied for the AIRE registration.  In the same way, Italian Consular offices, of the jurisdiction where the citizen reside, can also request AIRE registration for citizens residing abroad who have not yet file an individual application  but have requested a consular service (for example passport issuance).

AIRE registration could therefore be processed without one’s explicit request. In such cases, the citizen will be promptly informed by an administrative act of the Italian Township.
