Registration of Marriage Certificates

A marriage, of an Italian citizen, celebrated abroad must be registered in Italy, at the AIRE Municipality of the applicant.  Before being able to transcribe a marriage certificate, it is imperative that the previous marriages and/or related divorces be registered at the competent Italian municipality as well. Italian citizens born abroad, before requesting the transcription of their marriage certificate, must make sure that their birth certificate has been duly transcribed at an Italian municipality and indicate it on the transcription request form.

• The marriage certificate and license can be obtained from the City Hall or the County Clerk’s office of the state where the marriage took place.

• The mariage certificate and marriage license, depending on the State, can be issued as a single document (in which case it will be necessary to request only one Apostille) or as two separate documents (in which case an apostille will be required for each document).

• In addition to the names and birth dates of the spouses, marriage documents must also indicate:

– the city or township, where the marriage took place (the name of the county alone is NOT sufficient).

– the existence of any previous marriages and/or divorces ;

– the names of the spouses’ parents.

• The Apostille can be requested at the Secretary of State of the State in which the document was issued (for example, if the marriage certificate was issued by the Department of Health of Pennsylvania, the apostille must be requested at the Secretary of State in Pennsylvania).
